How we built an AI app for generating fancy AI avatars in no time

In December 2022, there was an explosion of AI-based products. While many futurists predict that AI will become the main driver of 2023, entrepreneurs immediately grabbed the opportunity.Uptech team didn’t stand aside.
Together with the no-code development studio – Sommo, we created Dyvo.ai – an AI-powered application that allows generating fancy AI avatars from your selfies. With Dyvo, users can create the most realistic AI profile pictures, pet portraits, dating photos, and content for Twitter / TikTok / Facebook / Instagram in no time.
With our product development approach, the time from the idea to the first release took less than a month, and here’s the outcome of our work:

This challenge was all about applying Stable Diffusion technology in its best shape and consisted of 3 parts:
1. To create images similar to the people depicted in the original photos;
2. To avoid artifacts and other bugs associated with AI;
3. To generate images that users will like (the most significant challenge).
We wanted to make the AI avatar creation process fast and literally of the best possible quality so that people can use avatars in various placements – from professional hyper-realistic profiles on Linkedin to fantasy cyberpunk portraits for computer games.
To have the best result in the shortest amount of time, we conducted a lot of experiments with training models, prompts, and configs (sampling methods, steps, CFG scale, X/Y plotting, and seeds). That way, we ensured that the users would get the AI-generated images that were the most similar to them while saving our time.

While conducting all those experiments, we faced another challenge – money. To better understand the root of the challenge, here's a quick look at the behind-the-scenes process of Dyvo.
Once a user uploads images and clicks the "Create avatar" button, the generating flow starts. At this point, the system is looking for a free GPU to process the images. The number and availability of these GPUs determine how fast the user will receive the avatars. Of course, we were striving for lightning speed.
So the challenge was to expand the chain of GPUs that would satisfy our ambitions and be cost-effective.
We realized that buying GPUs isn't an option because it's too pricy. To rent one GPU would cost us around $300-400 per month, which is also not cost-effective considering the price of generating avatars.
So we searched for other options and found runpod.io – a service that allows renting cloud GPUs on an hourly base. This means that we can rent the GPUs only when we need them. It was a winning decision and saved us a significant amount of money.

As we mentioned, in December 2022, there was an explosion of AI-based products. The open access to Stable Diffusion has proven to be a huge game changer. Numerous startups build upon Stable Defusion to create novel apps. The market we jumped into started to boom with enormous speed, and we had to think of possible ways to stand out and make users choose Dyvo over other apps. Our big goal for Dyvo was to help users create a lot of high-end AI pictures that they will use as avatars in various placements. And we wanted our users to get these pictures of the best quality in no time.
At Uptech, we build all products with the business' and users' needs in mind. To reach our big goal with Dyvo, we focused on the following:

✅ AI technology;
✅ Design.
We chose Bubble.io – a no-code tool that ensures flexibility and the ability to integrate various 3-party software quickly. It allowed us to use complex and unique AI tools and implement popular payment and analytical services.Our Design team created Dyvo for any online character, literally – a person, a couple, or even a cat or a dog. So the design is bold, super easy, fancy, vivid, and colorful.
P.S. One more development secret – we used our own no-code development tool Natively, to convert the Bubble application to mobile iOS/Android.
For Dyvo, having a presence on the App Store and Google Play Market was an important way of user acquisition. Creating mobile applications with Natively took no more than an hour. In addition, we could customize important native features: social auth, in-app purchases, push notifications, camera, etc.
