Carbon Club is a UK startup with a product that helps people see how their everyday habits affect the planet and provides them with practical ways to lower that impact. The founders wanted to create something less preachy and easier to relate to than most environmental apps on the market.

They came to Uptech in 2019 with an early concept built around carbon footprint tracking through bank transaction history. Before development, the team needed to understand whether people would actually use a product like this and what parts of the idea could be improved.

To figure that out, we arranged an offline meeting to run a Design Sprint workshop together. During the process, we mapped out the product vision, built a prototype, and tested it with real users from the UK. The feedback changed the direction of the product quite a bit. People liked the idea itself, but many did not want to connect their banking data to an environmental app.

Uptech helped Carbon Club redesign the product around quiz-based footprint tracking, eco tips, donations, and small gamified details that made the app feel lighter and more personal.

User Testing

"I would definitely consider a Design Sprint to get a rapid prototype. It really helped to form the product vision from the start and get to the core product very quickly, cutting down costs and making a far leaner proposition."

Challenges and Solutions

Bank Data Privacy Concerns

The original idea depended on bank transaction history to calculate a person’s environmental impact. During interviews, users said the concept sounded interesting, but many became hesitant once banking data entered the conversation.

Solution

The team stepped away from bank connections and switched to a simpler format. Instead of linking accounts, users answer a short questionnaire inside the app, which provides enough information to estimate their environmental footprint. With this change, the app feels safer and easier to try.

Unclear Product Direction

At the beginning, the product existed mostly as discussions, assumptions, and rough sketches. The founders needed to see how real people reacted before putting more time and money into development.

Solution

Uptech invited the client to an offline meeting for a Design Sprint workshop. Together, the teams mapped the product, built a prototype, and spoke with potential users. Those conversations helped shape a much clearer direction for the app.

Low Emotional Engagement

Many products in this space sound overly serious or full of guilt. The team wanted Carbon Club to feel lighter, more welcoming, and less exhausting for people who normally would not use environmental apps.

Solution

The experience stayed simple from the start. Short explanations, quick quizzes, and small practical tips replaced long texts and complicated calculations. Users understood the app faster and spent less time figuring out what to do next.

Early Prototype Validation

The founders wanted to test the idea early instead of spending months on development before speaking to users. Fast feedback mattered more than polished visuals at that stage.

Solution

Uptech focused on rapid prototype work and repeated user interviews. After several testing rounds, the team reached a version of the concept that people understood easily and reacted to much more positively.

Main features

Carbon Footprint Quiz

People answer a few quick questions about everyday routines like transport, shopping, and eating habits. Based on those answers, the app estimates their environmental footprint and explains the result in a way that feels clear instead of overly scientific.

Footprint Overview

The app breaks down where the biggest environmental impact comes from across different lifestyle categories. Users can scroll through simple summaries and get a better sense of which habits affect the planet the most in daily life.

Charity Donations

Users can choose environmental organizations and make donations directly inside the app. The feature connects people with causes related to forests, oceans, and wildlife without forcing them to leave the product or search for charities elsewhere.

Virtual Pet

A small virtual pet changes together with the user’s footprint results and becomes part of the overall experience. The feature adds a more playful side to the app and gives users something more personal than charts or statistics alone.

Everyday Eco Tips

The app shares smaller recommendations people can realistically follow in normal life. Instead of dramatic lifestyle advice, users receive practical suggestions connected to travel, shopping, home habits, and other everyday activities.
